So, I'm still struggling a bit with the whole appetite and taste thing. Sooo much better than when I first got out of the hospital, but for a foodie, it is still driving me nuts. I was speaking with a friend of Melissa's today, Dawn. Some background for you- I have learned first hand that your sense of taste is definitely involved in your sense of smell. When your taste buds are screwed up, guess what happens to your smell? Who would have thunk it? Anyway, smells that I normally love have been brutal to me. Garlic being the main one. I digress. I was explaining to Dawn today that I was very pleased that I woke up this AM and the smell of coffee was actually a pleasant smell. I told her that although it smelled great, I have not tried any yet, because I don't want to screw up my coffee for later days. If I try it now and it sucks, I may not like it when I'm back to normal. Kind of like chicken soup. Probably the best tasting soup I've ever had when I was sick is now something I am probably going to stay on the other side of the roof from. Being the brainiac that I am, I was shocked to learn that there is a scientific term for this. why Dawn knew this, I have no idea. She said "Oh, that is classic Conditioned Taste Aversion" as if this is a normal part of her vocabulary. She is a designer, I don't know why she would know this. Long story short, I told her I would look it up and see what it is all about. Well, she saved me the work. 10 minutes after she left she sent M a link for it. Check it out- she is right. It is scientific shit. Pavlov baby! GO HERE
On the recovery front, all is still going well. I am set to get my central line aka DVD Plugs out on Friday. They told me today that the bag of fluids I got at clinic this AM should be my last- ever. My platelets are still low, so I am expected to get a bag of plates on Friday AM before getting my line out. After that, if I need any fluids, plates or whatever they will do it via a normal IV. This is awesome freakin news, but the downside is that I'll be getting a needle stick every time I go to clinic after Friday so they can draw labs. I'm thinking after all that I've had to do the last 6 months, I can handle it. Oh, I also had a house call from my Chiropractor today. Good stuff. One tends to become very stiff with little to no activity and laying around all the time. He's a great guy. Not many folks around these days that will provide that kind of service. SIgning out.
Jeff, thanks for the very informative conversations you put on your blog. I am learning so much.
So glad the plugs come out...that is so significant!
Miss seeing you both during this adventure. As always I am praying.
Give my sweet daughter an extra kiss from her mom...thanks!
Love from Ohio...Mom P

suhweeeeettt! so glad that your central line is leaving the building. G-Mag and I are headed up Friday afternoon for the P-WOD for ya, so if you're needing some of that yellow gold, we'll stock you up.
conditioned taste aversion - that's my issue with goldschlager, I'm pretty sure.
so so so glad to hear of the constant progress...very very very happy to hear the positive news.
p.s. - I loved 66 slam balls for the JWOD today. Even after 70 burpees in the regular WOD. There's something pretty therapeutic about those...

Hey J&M! You guys have no idea how many eyes are on this blog daily. Thanks so much for keeping us updated! Here is another bit of trivia...did you know that if the platelets are a greenish color that means the donor is on some type of horomone i.e. birth control?? So if your voice starts to change or you get moody once a month, you had too many greenish donations!! :)

Hey J&M
Just called to schedule platelet donation and will have to wait until after Sept 11 (for follow up to a little belly button hernia op) :( - still planning on it, though.
Wanted to let you know that I didn't even speak to Angela Howell (she has the day off) but another recruiter asked me if there was a specific person I was donating for, I started to say Je...and she said, Jeff Hayes??? Must be pretty popular over there...
Sending good vibes to you all today!!

Take it from someone who decided against the port, it sucks getting stuck every single day for months, and my veins are still in rough shape - you made the right choice buddy! You brought me back to remembering how much I wanted my IV out after having it in for 5 days at a time. Good times. ;)
Amazing that we can be conditioned to associate tastes and smells as negative things. Realizing that, aren't we empowered to decide for ourselves? Interesting stuff, Dr. Hayes!

Hey Jeff, I hope the good news just keeps on coming. Now
I have some good news to share with you. I ran the Avondale Labor Day 5K and set a new personal best - even though I haven't run outside of CrossFit since early spring. I set my previous PR last year after my first month of BTB Boot Camp at 26:00 (which was at least a 2 minute improvement). This year I ran it in 24:35. You told me last year that I would beat 25 minutes this year, but I didn't believe you. I'll never doubt you again. I'm so glad that I met you & Melissa and found BTB - the way you've helped improve my fitness over the last year has had a big, positive impact on my life.
Stay strong.
